High Voltage Beer Festival

High Voltage Beer Festival

Due to the thirst for real ale from High Voltage Festival goers last year, we brewed up the first High Voltage Beer Festival, with over 30 real ales and ciders. Set in the heart of the festival, it’s a meeting place for friends old and new a place to get together and sample the selection of beers, whilst sitting and listening to the best in unsigned acoustic, folk, blues and bluegrass artists on our Beer Festival Stage.

Sample the High Voltage Festival Ale ‘HIGH MALTAGE’ brewed by Brodies and named by our ‘Hop To It’ Facebook competition winner Liam Overend.

Find out which beers will be available at the Beer Festival by following this link to our tasting notes.

The Ramshackle Union Band

The Ramshackle Union Band peddle a fine line in stomping bluegrass-tinged-folk, playing with big heart and a free-spirited ethos. Heralded by NME as “woozy bluegrass for weary hearts and bleeding minds”, their sound is in debt to classic roots music, while feeling vital and fresh. Based around rich four-part harmonies, with raucous, tumbling rhythms and equal penchant for loverlorn heartbreak and giddy good times, they’re fast rising as one of the most talked-about new folk bands around.

Leo’s Garden

Leo’s Garden

Leo’s Garden capture the rawness of the 70’s and merge that with the eclectic vibe of the new millennium. Always honest and true, they have the ability to embrace Velvet Underground weirdness with vocal harmonies, thoughtful lyrics, dirty guitars and heavy rhythms. This is back to basics.

Warm Rain

The brainchild of singer songwriter Leon J Russell, Warm Rain have a quintessentially English feel, managing to sound of their time, whilst remaining faithful to the traditions laid down before them, by the great English rock bands of the past.

Joe Goode with Sophie Kelly

13.20 – 14.00
Joe Goode with Sophie Kelly

Singer / songwriter Joe Goode made his recent move from drummer to frontman, after an interesting series of events, and continues to grow in popularity as his musical repertoire flourishes. Having been in the ‘musical closet’ for numerous years, we finally get to hear some of the mellifluous gems from his enormous, very private collection.

“This is something I’ve always done, but never in public until quite recently – I was pretty much bullied into not being such a coward, but was very pleasantly surprised about how many people liked this type of thing. I like to keep things very delicate & melodic, and keep songs short & uncomplicated.”

You might hear a touch of S&G, Sam Cooke & Jeff Buckley underneath a soft folk guise in the shape of Damien Rice or the Mumfords, in songs based around often tabooed subjects, such as mental illness, old age & death.
This dark but beautiful blend is enhanced with the voice of singer Sophie Kelly, who is joining Joe for the summer season.

John McIvor

12.20 – 13.00
John McIvor

John is influenced by almost anything and everything in music, and he manages to boils it all down into his simple folk songs. The band behind him create a groove-based backbone to his songs.
John’s voice is husky and naisely, and with that is nothing less then impressive finger-picking on his jangly guitar.

Adam Gafsen

Adam Gafsen has an innovative and unique playing style. He uses the acoustic guitar in a melodic, sometimes percussive, often dramatic, yet always compelling way. Inspired by the late great Isaac Guilllory; not only in terms of technique and taste. With an interesting use of harmonics, a contemporary spin on the vintage Echoplex sound, there are also definite John Martyn influences. Adam moves effortlessly from the blues, rock, ambient fingerstyle, right the way through to and encompassing jazz, trad, classical, country, and alt-folk.

The Amber Herd

14.20 – 15.00
The Amber Herd

“… both blissfully melancholic indie and uplifting stripped-back folk and comes to a sprawling, open-mouthed finish with an almost Velvet Underground-esque wall of sound, acoustics flitting between prog keyboard stabs and all buried under Neil Beards’ darkly overdriven Mary Chain guitar. Nottingham’s best kept secret?”
